Deep Tech Centre
Where Research Meets Business
The UI Science Park is preparing to build a centre where universities, institutions and companies will co-operatively run and maintain important research infrastructure. The Deep Tech Centre–built on-site in the Science Park–will offer first-class, highly specialised technological facilities for research and development.
Our Goal
Co-operative venue for universities, institutions and private actors
Better opportunities for interdisciplinary activity
Shared expertise and first-rate research facilities
Improved environment for scientific innovation
Across Disciplines
The Deep Tech Centre will be home to researchers and entrepreneurs from many disciplines. We are expecting these fields and more to be represented. What Is Deep Tech?
Healthcare and Medical Sciences
Biotech
Pharmaceuticals
Agriculture
Geology
Energy and Sustainability
Supercomputers and AI
Language technology
… and more
One Step at a Time
Facility Survey
The UI Science Park is currently surveying all local research facilities in co-operation with the University of Iceland, University of Reykjavík, University of Akureyri and Hólar, IceTec, The National Hospital, and the Iceland University of the Arts.
Establishing Co-Operation
Universities, research institutions, companies and government must all work together to make the Deep Tech Centre a reality. The aforementioned survey is an important first step to bring all stakeholders together. The next step is mapping the different needs of the users so they can be taken into account in the design process.
Learning from Others
UI Science Parks are partnering with the DTU Science Park in Copenhagen when it comes to the construction and operation of the Deep Tech Centre. We are also looking towards replicating the success of Science for Life Laboratories in Stockholm and others.

“The planned Deep Tech Centre offers great opportunities for interdisciplinary work across all fields of study. The concept is based on current university policy, i.e. to bolster basic research and publish more whilst taking part in collaborative projects, both domestically and internationally.”
— Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector, University of Iceland
Timeline
Preparation for the Deep Tech Centre began in 2021. After garnering support from government bodies, universities and companies, an operating company was founded in 2024 to further develop the business model and prepare construction. The aim is to open doors in 2028.
“A building is just a building, just concrete. The Deep Tech Centre is nothing without the people and their knowledge.”
– Hans Guttormur Þormar, former DTC project manager
